How will these events reshape the way we plan our travels in the future?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we choose to travel long distances, we face an important decision about our impact on climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Canada, passenger transportation is responsible for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cer-rec.gc.ca\/en\/data-analysis\/energy-markets\/market-snapshots\/2016\/market-snapshot-increased-ghg-emissions-from-transportation-sector-reflect-major-consumer-business-trends.html#:~:text=The%20largest%20source%20of%20transportation,transportation%20sector%2C%20or%2095%20MT.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">55% of total greenhouse gas emissions<\/a> from the transportation sector and greenhouse gas emissions from passenger vehicles have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/environment-climate-change\/services\/environmental-indicators\/greenhouse-gas-emissions.html#:~:text=the%20transport%20sector-,Greenhouse%20gas%20emissions%20from%20the%20transport%20sector,-Key%20Results\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">increased by 38%<\/a> over the past two decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These numbers are a clear reminder that the way we choose to travel can make a big impact on our carbon footprint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Our wake up call<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2021, Canadians experienced extreme weather events that caused disruption on an unprecedented scale.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Provincial state of emergency declared to mitigate impacts on transportation networks &amp; movement of essential goods &amp; supplies, &amp; to support the provincewide response and recovery from the widespread damage caused by severe flooding and landslides in BC: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/I014rF2x9c\">https:\/\/t.co\/I014rF2x9c<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Emergency Info BC (@EmergencyInfoBC) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EmergencyInfoBC\/status\/1461086797140619272?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 17, 2021<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Heat domes triggered the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/british-columbia\/bc-alberta-heat-wave-heat-dome-temperature-records-1.6084203\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">highest temperatures ever recorded<\/a> in Canada, forest fires <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/british-columbia\/bc-wildfires-2021-timeline-1.6197751\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">peaked much earlier than usual<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/8396118\/b-c-atlantic-rain-canada-climate-future\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">atmospheric rivers<\/a> caused life threatening flooding and washouts in the Pacific and Atlantic regions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These catastrophic events gave Canadians a glimpse into our climate\u2019s future and affected everyone\u2019s lives in some way.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For those of us who work at Poparide, these events gave us pause for thought. It became clear that we needed to focus greater attention on <strong>spreading the word about the environmental benefits of sharing rides and filling empty seats in cars<\/strong> when travelling between cities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Thinking carefully about travel<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In November 2021, extreme rains brought devastating floods and landslides to British Columbia. It was one of the only times since the completion of the Canadian Pacific Railroad in 1885 that <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalpost.com\/news\/canada\/photos-the-catrastrophic-damage-that-severed-b-c-from-the-rest-of-canada\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">every single Canadian land route to the Pacific had been cut<\/a>, including both major rail lines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Trans Mountain pipeline and critical gas lines serving the City of Vancouver were also forced to close. In response, the BC government announced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/british-columbia\/b-c-officials-announce-limits-on-gas-purchases-for-non-essential-vehicles-travel-restrictions-1.6255781\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">limits on gas purchases<\/a> for non-essential vehicles and travel restrictions along damaged highways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">There is a limited fuel supply in\u00a0southwest\u00a0BC right now\u00a0following\u00a0severe flooding and landslides. We all need to work together to make sure fuel is\u00a0available for\u00a0essential and emergency service vehicles. (1\/2) <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/OMRqwn5Pyk\">pic.twitter.com\/OMRqwn5Pyk<\/a><\/p>&mdash; BC Government News (@BCGovNews) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BCGovNews\/status\/1462196168931221505?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 20, 2021<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This forced BC residents to think more carefully about how and when they travel. While many people delayed travel plans, others who needed to travel were faced with changing road and weather conditions that made planning their trips more complicated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the first time, many of us started to <strong>think differently about how climate change will impact our ability to get around in future.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The right time to travel<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As atmospheric rivers arrived in BC, orders related to non-essential travel on several major routes remained in place. Some routes were initially closed and then reopened intermittently depending upon conditions, while several stretches along these routes were reserved for essential travel only with <a href=\"https:\/\/bc.ctvnews.ca\/travel-for-work-not-considered-essential-for-many-in-b-c-ministry-says-of-highway-order-1.5680170\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fines of as much as $230<\/a> for those caught breaking the rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Restrictions for essential travel are in place on stretches of <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/BCHwy3?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#BCHwy3<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/BCHwy7?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#BCHwy7<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/BCHwy99?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#BCHwy99<\/a>. Road checks are in place and being enforced. Some of our members reached out with questions such as, <strong>\u201cCan I post on Poparide if my trip isn\u2019t essential?\u201d<\/strong> and <strong>\u201cAm I allowed to travel?\u201d<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All travellers had serious decisions to make. Each driver and passenger needed to ensure that they were driving at the right time and for the right reasons or face potentially serious consequences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reducing chaos during evacuations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the summer of 2021, record high temperatures caused severe wildfires across British Columbia, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Ontario, <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/8042760\/air-quality-environment-canada-wildfires\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">triggering evacuation orders<\/a> and causing smoke to drift thousands of kilometres away.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">DO NOT travel to areas affected by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/BCWildfires?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#BCWildfires<\/a> for non-essential reasons.<br>People in those communities need to be able to evacuate, if needed, and access supports.<br>If you had plans, please change them. Instead, visit somewhere in BC your presence won\u2019t strain local resources. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/nikni3Urg8\">pic.twitter.com\/nikni3Urg8<\/a><\/p>&mdash; BC Transportation (@TranBC) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TranBC\/status\/1427409854260518914?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 16, 2021<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In light of these events, jurisdictions across the country have been reviewing their evacuation strategies to ensure the safety of their residents. In situations where sufficient advance notice to evacuate can be provided, <strong>some jurisdictions are now considering innovative transportation solutions\u2014including carpooling<\/strong>\u2014to reduce traffic congestion and move people efficiently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whistler.ca\/services\/emergency\/evacuating-whistler\/sea-sky-evacuation-plan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Resort Municipality of Whistler<\/a> and the District of Squamish have endorsed plans to broadcast information promoting Poparide in public information messaging prior to and during an evacuation, depending upon the urgency of the situation. People would be encouraged to offer a ride to friends or neighbours that do not have a vehicle or to register their empty seats on our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.poparide.com?c=blog-climate-change-is-reshaping-travel-in-Canada\">carpooling platform<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This proactive approach could help reduce congestion and demand for fuel while supporting people in communities without personal transportation during a time of crisis. It could also help reduce the number of buses needed to transport people without vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The future of travel in uncertain times<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Extreme weather triggered by climate change has had a profound impact on Canadians and people all around the world over the past year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For many of us, this has changed the way we think about travelling.
