There are two main designations for tires:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Tires with M+S<\/strong> for \u201cMud + Snow\u201d are rated for their ability to provide traction in winter conditions where the temperature is below 7\u00b0C, and must have a thread depth of minimum 3.5mm. These are legally required for driving on certain highways in British Columbia and during winter in Qu\u00e9bec.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Tires with a snowflake or mountain<\/strong> meet the required performance to drive in snow conditions. While these tires are not compulsory, they are strongly recommended when driving in snow and ice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www2.gov.bc.ca\/gov\/content\/transportation\/driving-and-cycling\/traveller-information\/seasonal\/winter-driving\/winter-tire-and-chain-up-routes\">British Columbia<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/point-s.ca\/en\/blog-and-advices\/installation-winter-tires-advanced-december-1st\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Qu\u00e9bec<\/a> have laws requiring vehicles to have winter tires. Other provinces and territories do not have laws but strongly recommend them when driving in winter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We advise all Poparide drivers making a trip during winter to have winter tires with the snowflake symbol as these provide the safest way to drive on snow and ice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Check road conditions and the weather forecast<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"585\" src=\"https:\/\/poparideblog.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Driver_Tip3_Winter-1024x585.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-393\" srcset=\"https:\/\/poparideblog.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Driver_Tip3_Winter-1024x585.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/poparideblog.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Driver_Tip3_Winter-300x172.jpg 300w, https:\/\/poparideblog.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Driver_Tip3_Winter-768x439.jpg 768w, https:\/\/poparideblog.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Driver_Tip3_Winter.jpg 1401w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before you head out on a trip, make sure to check the Government of Canada\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/weather.gc.ca\/canada_e.html\">weather forecast<\/a> for any winter storms coming up, or download the Weather Channel app on your phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In particular, check for any winter storm or ice warnings and consider rescheduling your trip if you haven\u2019t left yet! Better safe than sorry&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re driving in British Columbia, make sure to check <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.gov.bc.ca\/gov\/content\/transportation\/driving-and-cycling\/traveller-information\/seasonal\/winter-driving\/winter-tire-and-chain-up-routes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">highway restrictions<\/a> as most roads east of Vancouver require winter tires between October 1st and April 30th.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Carry winter equipment <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"585\" src=\"https:\/\/poparideblog.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Driver_Tip4_Winter-1024x585.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-394\" srcset=\"https:\/\/poparideblog.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Driver_Tip4_Winter-1024x585.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/poparideblog.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Driver_Tip4_Winter-300x172.jpg 300w, https:\/\/poparideblog.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Driver_Tip4_Winter-768x439.jpg 768w, https:\/\/poparideblog.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Driver_Tip4_Winter.jpg 1401w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It can get really, really cold during winter in Canada. We\u2019re talking -30C cold in some areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You\u2019ll want to make sure you are dressed for the occasion. That means wearing a windproof, down jacket, a toque (eh), gloves, really warm socks, waterproof shoes and possibly long johns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also, if you\u2019re driving, you\u2019ll need to carry a shovel to dig your car out if it snows, an ice scraper to remove the ice from your windscreen and some deicing liquid to keep your windscreen nice and clean and in case your doors freeze up (this happens a lot!).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Top tip: you can buy a second-hand shovel, scraper and warm clothing for super cheap at most thrift stores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Have a plan B<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"585\" src=\"https:\/\/poparideblog.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Driver_Tip5_Winter-1024x585.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/poparideblog.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Driver_Tip5_Winter-1024x585.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/poparideblog.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Driver_Tip5_Winter-300x172.jpg 300w, https:\/\/poparideblog.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Driver_Tip5_Winter-768x439.jpg 768w, https:\/\/poparideblog.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Driver_Tip5_Winter.jpg 1401w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s always a good idea to have a plan B if you end up being stuck in a Canadian winter storm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re already on the road and hit a storm, we recommend you take a break and wait for the storm to pass (Tim\u2019s does a really good double-double).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Driving in winter conditions can also be tiring, so it\u2019s always a good idea to travel with another driver who can take over. Fatigue behind the wheel is a common cause for accidents, so don\u2019t hesitate to book a motel for the night if you feel tired and no one else can drive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the conditions are really bad and you haven\u2019t left yet, we recommend leaving your car at home and using public transit instead, or simply taking a day off and rescheduling your trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do you have any other feedback or ideas on how to drive safely during Canadian winter?
